Virtual Wards

The rollout of virtual wards started on July 1st in University Hospital Limerick and St Vincent's University Hospital Dublin. The initial focus is on early discharge for cardiology and respiratory patients. Up to 18 August, 491 virtual bed days had been used by 107 patients across both sites.

Advantages for patients includes a lower risk of hospital-acquired infections, less deconditioning and a psychological boost from home comforts. Virtual wards also free up physical hospital beds.
