Digital INEWS Ward 8D

Digital INEWS VSA went live on ward 8D on the 27th of June. This patient safety project migrates from an INEWS paper-based system to a digital INEWS ‘track and trigger’ tool.

It allows the clinical staff at the nurse’s station to have oversight of all patient INEWS scores and vital-signs on a single screen. The status of each patient (based on score) is presented in an easy to assess, colour-coded format with time remaining until next INEWS recording clearly visible on screen. It can assist clinical staff in the detection of, and response to, the clinically deteriorating adult in-patient and identify acutely unwell patients in acute hospitals leading to improved patient outcomes.

Benefits include:

•Reduction in INEWS error rate
•Reduction in critical care admissions and readmissions
•Reduction in cardiac arrest rates
•Facilitates early recognition of deterioration
•Information enabled care
•Reduced length of stay
•Increased staff productivity, ease of use and patient welfare
•Increased Sepsis 6 within 1 hour
•Track and trace observations and calculates score
•Enables anticipation of what patient needs
•Visibility of ward acuity level
•Organisational ward management
•More time efficient
•Reduces work left undone
•Supports flow management
•Supports resource allocation
•Staff retention
•Integration with a range of hospital information systems including MedLis, NIMIS iPMS, Drug management systems and eHealth architecture
•Shows progress - 75% of UK hospitals have digital system

Thank you to everyone involved that helped implement this important patient safety initiative.
