Health Care Workers invited to get MMR vaccine at free clinics across the Mid-West

Health Care Workers across the Mid-West are being invited to attend one of the free MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) Catch Up Vaccination Clinics over the coming weeks if they require the vaccine.

What is happening?

Measles is a viral infection that spreads very easily and can cause serious problems in some people e.g. children under the age of 12 months, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.

Measles is on the rise – here in Ireland, across Europe and further afield.

If you’re travelling abroad this summer and you are not immune to measles, there is a risk of catching the virus.

What is the advice for Health Care Workers?

Healthcare workers should have evidence to show that they are protected against measles -  to protect both themselves and their patients.

Evidence may be a record of having received 2 doses of the MMR vaccine or a positive measles IgG antibody test (blood test).

It’s estimated that about 90% of adults born in Ireland before 1978 are likely to have had measles infection but MMR vaccine should be offered to such individuals if they are considered at high risk of being exposed to measles.

If you know you are not protected against measles, we urge you to attend one of the vaccination clinics happening at present or speak with your GP.

If you are unsure if you are protected or not, you can check your records with your Occupational Health dept. and or you can speak with one of the vaccinators at our vaccination clinics.
