cANP in Gynaecology in Nenagh Hospital

Catherine Henry (pictured below) is a Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner (cANP) in Gynaecology in Nenagh Hospital Regional Women’s Health Hub.  Catherine trained as nurse in Whipps Cross University Hospital (London), spending four years working in the UK specialising in Emergency care.

She joined ULHG in 2007 as a student midwife in University Maternity Hospital (UMH), where she worked for 15 years, giving her an extensive background in women’s health.  Catherine’s most recent role in UMH was a CMM2 in the labour ward.

In line with NMBI guidance on maintaining the core responsibilities and professional standards of advanced nursing practice, support and clinical governance of her candidacy post is provided by Dr. Naro Imcha (clinical lead) and the NMPDU. To develop her scope of practice she is undertaking a M.Sc. in Advanced Nursing Practice and working with the obstetrics and gynaecology consultants.  This facilitates attainment of the expertise and development of skills and qualities required to safely assess, manage, and discharge a patient caseload.

The HSE and the National Women and Infants Health Programme have established Regional Women’s Health Hubs, enhancing referral pathways for specialist gynaecology care provision. This one-stop ‘see-and-treat’ model has improved access to diagnostics and treatment, resulting in fewer hospital visits and reducing overall wait times for women.  Multidisciplinary team collaboration ensures that women experience a seamless pathway of care, eliminating fragmentation and duplication of care.  Catherine said “I am delighted to be a part of the development and application of the new ambulatory gynaecology model in Nenagh Hospital. The role of the ANP in women’s health is integral to this model; when qualified I aim to run my own clinics, enhancing gynaecology care provision and access to women of the Mid West.”
