Transition to Practice Programme 2023

A new development programme has been rolled out to support graduates through the transition from their internship student nurse placements to their role as Registered Nurse.

The New Graduate General Nurse Programme has been offered to those who graduated from the BSc Nursing (General) Programme in October 2023.

The programme is designed to hone their clinical competence and confidence as they progress along Benner’s Stages of Clinical Competence from Novice to Clinical Expert (Benner 1982).

The programme will endorse clinical excellence in a supportive learning environment through a structured induction, targeted education sessions and a nationally endorsed mentorship programme.

The objective of the Transition to Practice Programme is

•Empower the graduate and support their transition to Registered General Nurse
•Increase job satisfaction and retention
•Provide a structure that embraces improved quality and increased engagement
•Improved staff retention will allow growth of the nursing workforce skill mix thus improving patient care and supporting workforce development.  The correlation between staff wellbeing, job satisfaction and a positive work environment are intrinsically linked to positive organisational outcomes such as decreased absenteeism, reduced recruitment and fundamentally improved patient experience and outcomes.

Participants can choose either a direct entry to one area or a rotational pathway with access to study days which included:

•Wound  Assessment & Management
•Final Journeys: End of Life Care
•Acute & Chronic Pain Management
