UHL Artist in Residence
Renowned writer and poet Kevin Toolis commences a programme in UHL to help patients who are living with life limiting illness.
The participants will be assisted by Kevin to record something important to them.
This process will help the patient to capture their wisdom and truth about life.
Kevin will help them to record complex feelings and perhaps find relief through challenging times.
Patients can be referred to Kevin through a referral form.

Patient Flow Improvement - SAFER
As part of the Patient Flow Improvement Programme, SAFER is implemented across all inpatient wards to improve patient flow.
SAFER reduces delays for patients in inpatient wards and improves safety.
- Senior review: All patients will have a senior review before midday
- All patients will have a predicted discharge date(PDD) and Clinical Criteria for Discharge set. Patients must be kept informed.
- Flow of patients to start asap from assessment units to inpatient wards. First patient to arrive on the ward by 10am.
- Early Discharge every day, aim for discharges before 11am.
- Review. A multidisciplinary review of patients with long lengths of stay to occur daily.
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
Employee Assistance Programme provides the following free confidential services:
- Counselling
- Consultation to managers on staff wellbeing and psychosocial issues
- Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Response- providing individual and group support
- Workshops on staff wellbeing issues

Steps to Health Challenge 2023
The steps challenge is a five week walking challenge that supports staff to walk more.
It starts on the 8th May until 11th June 2023.
The aim is to get you walking and counting your steps daily. It is for everyone, regardless of your fitness or ability level.

Admission Rate of ED Presentations
Emergency Department (ED) admission rates show the % of ED presentations that result in admission to hospital.
The ULHG average overall admission rate for the first 3 months of 2023 was 28%. This is an increase of 4% when compared with the first 3 months of 2022.
HSE NFR Training – May 2023
The HSE National Financial Regulations (NFRs) were relaunched recently, into 11 NFRs. The NFRs are the HSE’s key control documents when undertaking financial decisions and transactions. NFR Training is recommended for all Managers/Staff who authorise expenditure.

Invoice Capture Solution Project
The Invoice Capture Solution Project goes live on Tuesday 11th April. Invoice Capture is an automated payment processing solution. Training has taken place with relevant staff.
Any staff dealing with invoices should be aware of the following:
- All invoices must have a valid 10-digit SAP purchase order(PO) number starting with 4500. If there is no valid PO number, the invoice will be returned to the supplier.
- The supplier emails their invoice to invoices@hse.ie, invoice details are processed electronically.
- Invoice details including a copy of the invoice will be posted to SAP.
- Check delivery dockets on receipt of goods and return via email to procurement.mwgrn@hse.ie to avoid payment penalties.

ULHG Tax Training
ULHG Tax Training was held, March 13th in UHL with over 220 attendees from Community, Corporate and Acute settings in the HSE Mid-West area.
This training was held in preparation for the implementation of Invoice Capture Solution Project.
This training was provided in collaboration with the HSE National Tax Department and the HSE National SAP Stabilisation team.

UL School of Medicine win SimWars
The National SimWars competition was recently hosted by the Emergency Society at RCSI and RCSI Sim in their state-of-the art facility in Dublin. The UL School of Medicine team “TBI Friday’s” won and were named National Champions.
SimWars is a simulation resuscitation competition involving medical and nursing students from universities across Ireland. This is the third win for ULHG having won previously in 2020 and 2021.
Congratulations to “Spleens of the Stone Age” who finished overall 3rd in the competition.
