Donation to Paediatric Diabetes Team
Service user Dan Moran, 14, along with his family, recently donated over €4,000 to the Paediatric Diabetes team at Children's Ark, UHL.
Dr Orla Neylon, Adam Moran, Mairead Moran, Kathleen Hartnett, Dan Moran and Mary Norris.
The funds were raised through a swim in Ballybunion. Dan, from Abbeyfeale, expressed his gratitude for the team's support to Dr. Orla Neylon and CNS Mary Norris. Accompanying Dan were his brother Adam, 7, mother Mairead, and granny Kathleen Hartnett, all of whom are thankful for the care and assistance provided by the Paediatric Diabetes service. The generosity of Dan and his family are very much appreciated by the staff at Children's Ark.

Nutrition and Hydration week
The purpose of Nutrition and Hydration week is to educate staff who care for patients on the importance of their patients eating and drinking sufficiently to maintain health and wellbeing and to recover more quickly from illness.

To meet nutritional requirements, patients are offered two snacks daily in addition to their meals. These high calorie snacks are essential to meet their protein and calorie requirements, especially for those with a small appetite.
Snack success is dependent on the factors in the diagram above
Snacks offered and available on the wards include: Crackers and cheese, biscuits, yoghurts, sandwiches, fruit, rice pudding and custard pots.
New Uniforms for ULHG Porters
Operational Services and the Portering team at UL Hospitals Group introduced a new uniform for porters on March 21, 2024.
The new uniform not only aims to make the porters easily identifiable to colleagues but also to patients at all UL Hospitals sites.

Implementation of the new uniform was a quality improvement priority for the Operational Services General Manager and her team. The initiative was well-received by Porters, who are vital for safe patient care and flow at all our hospital sites.
Social Media Staff Use Guidelines
The HSE has devised a social media policy to guide and support us in our use of social media, both at work and outside of work. As staff, we are expected to maintain the same high standards of conduct and behaviour online as would be expected through other channels.

Croom Water Saving Initiative
In line with the HSE Climate action plan, the theatre department in Croom Orthopaedic Hospital are aiming to reduce water consumption. On World Water Day, Friday 22 March all theatre staff were encouraged to use an alcohol-based scrubbing agent in place of water.
All multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged to participate in this initiative. For more information contact Méabh Roche CNM2, Croom, meabh.roche@hse.ie
Note: Correct use of Skinman surgical scrub requires a regular water wash for the first scrub of the day, using alcohol thereafter. By replacing all subsequent scrubs there was a saving of 2,394 litres of water in the department on Friday 22nd March.

Congratulations UHL Psycho-Oncology team
The UHL Psycho-Oncology team, established in July 2022, presented a research poster at the recent inaugural Irish Psychosocial Oncology Network conference in St James’ Hospital in March. This poster showcased research on a group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) programme for cancer-related distress.

The UHL Psycho-Oncology team were awarded Best Research Poster on the day. The judges commented on the depth of clinical work provided to a large group of cancer patients, which had a significant impact on waiting times in a busy hospital service.

New Visual Art Exhibition at UHL
The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Councillor Gerald Mitchell, opened an exhibition last week at UHL, showcasing artwork loaned by the Arts Office at Limerick City and County Council.

This initiative is part of UL Hospitals Group Arts Committee's efforts to promote Arts and Health in healthcare settings. The artwork aims to create a more welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff, while also aiding in wayfinding, providing comfort and distraction, and enhancing overall wellbeing. The exhibition features paintings by renowned Irish artists, offering them a chance to reach new audiences, especially those who may face challenges accessing art due to illness.
