Happy International Day of the Midwife 

Happy International Day of the Midwife to our incredible midwives and student midwives at University Maternity Hospital Limerick.

We appreciate the amazing work and care you provide to mothers and babies.

 



Mothers and babies born in UMHL on International Day of the Midwife received commemorative birth certificates.

Transition Year students from the Mid West region visited the hospital to learn about career opportunities in midwifery.


 



Research Director in the Mid West

The HSE has established research directorates in each of the new healthcare regions. The appointment of Professor Declan Lyons as Research Director in the Mid West is the first of these appointments. Prof Lyons took up his post in November 2023.

The Directorate aims to support research projects from small student studies to complex intervention investigations and multicentre international trials. The aim is to facilitate reliable high-quality and innovative clinical research which improves health outcomes for people in the Mid West and beyond.

Cancer Directorate Health and Wellbeing Day 

 



Fifty staff members from the Cancer Directorate gathered at the CERC building UHL on Saturday 20 April for a day of relaxation and fun. Thank you to the Healthy Ireland team for the funding that made this Health and Wellbeing day possible.


 



RCPI Regional Programme Director for Basic Specialist Training in General Medicine

Dr Alwin Sebastian was recently appointed the RCPI Regional Programme Director for Basic Specialist Training in Medicine for the Mid West region.

A consultant Rheumatologist & Physician at ULHG, he is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Essex, UK.

Dr Sebastian has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and developed the Pretest probability score algorithm in Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA).

He has a special interest in vascular and musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound, using it to diagnose early inflammatory arthritis, GCA, and Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) as well as guiding MSK injections. In his new role, he aims to improve the trainee experience and competitiveness of the BST program in the region.

The Be Summer Ready campaign provides crucial information to ensure preparedness for the summer period. The focus of the 2024 campaign is “TravelWise”. It aims to highlight staying safe while travelling abroad this summer and advice on preparations prior to travel.

Other important safety information and advice in this campaign includes:

Gardening Health and Wellbeing Day 

 



Staff attended a day of gardening and wellness at Mary's Organic Gardens at the Woodlands Hotel. Everyone enjoyed learning, connecting, and immersing themselves in nature. More health and wellbeing workshops are planned as part of the Health & Wellbeing Programme 2024.

Average Medical Length of Stay for UL Hospitals Group for the first four months 2023 v 2024.

The average length of stay for medical patients in ULHG has decreased by 5.27% from 4.86 days in 2023 to 4.61 days in 2024.

MN-CMS Project Implementation

The Maternal Newborn Clinical Management System (MN-CMS) is an Electronic Health Record (EHR) for all women and babies being cared for in maternity, newborn and gynaecology services in Ireland.

In phase one, four sites in Ireland started using the MN-CMS EHR system. ULHG is in phase two of the project rollout and we expect to implement the system in 2025.

There are many key benefits of MN-CMS including:

•Improved patient care
•More accurate recording of information
•Enhanced clinical audit and research
•Informed business intelligence
•Full audit trail capability

ULHG Charity Cycle

Congratulations to all staff and friends who participated in the recent charity cycle from UHL to Croom, raising an impressive €1700 for Down Syndrome Ireland Limerick.

The Health and Wellbeing team, UHL Sports and Social Club along with colleagues from Operational Services and Finance department, organised the 60km cycle.

Well done to everyone involved in promoting health, wellness, and giving back to the community.
