New Respiratory Clinic Ennis

Dr Umar Khan respiratory consultant has commenced general respiratory clinics in Ennis supporting the excellent nurse led respiratory service that is already there.

This will be of great benefit to the respiratory nurse led services with collaboration with diagnostics such as CT scans and Pulmonary Function tests. It ensures local access to specialist services for patients in Co Clare. This multidisciplinary approach for patients either waiting to be diagnosed or already diagnosed will ensure they receive the best evidence-based care locally and in a timely fashion. It also ensures that a meaningful, holistic and thorough assessment is performed, and they can be diagnosed and managed accordingly.

This is an invaluable service in preventing hospital admission and reducing waiting lists. Improving patient experiences by removing the need to travel long distances from their homes in Clare to Limerick to be reviewed by a specialist multi-disciplinary team.

Having access to the consultant in the OPD, working in collaboration with the respiratory ANP and CNS ensures these patients receive high quality care closer to home resulting in improved patient experience and health outcomes.

Good Catch award on Trauma Ward

Staff Nurse Rebecca Forde recognised an orthopaedic emergency and escalated it in a timely and appropriate manner. She used her clinical judgement and acted on it. This reduced the risk of complications for a patient and allowed for timely surgical intervention.

International Nursing Students

We recently had the pleasure of hosting 10 Undergraduate Nursing Students from Gwynedd Mercy University, USA in collaboration with The Department of Nursing & Midwifery, University of Limerick.

The students were allocated to St. Johns’ Hospital and University Hospital Limerick. They spent time in clinical wards/ units observing nursing practice.

Many thanks to all the CPCs, CNMS, Staff Nurses and Nursing Students who facilitated this placement for our American colleagues.
